The stages of being a comics fan:

  1. You don’t read comics and you have no idea what’s going on in comics. Blissful ignorance.
  2. You start reading comics sporadically, or following just one title. You still have no idea what’s going on, but now you’d like to.
  3. You read comics obsessively and follow several titles as well as back issues. Wednesday is the highlight of your week. You still have no idea what’s going on.
  4. You resent the fact that you have to buy so many titles and read so many issues to get the proper context for any given storyline. Wednesday is the worst day of your week and your wallet cries for mercy. You still have no idea what the hell is going on in comics.
  5. You stop reading comics. Return to stage one and repeat the cycle.

Ojisama to Neko: “The Things We Love”
(Continued in “Pouring Tears”)

[Original comic can be found on twitter HERE]

It took me so long to translate these past two installments because I was too busy CRYING OVER THEM. Really, though, as sensitive as I am and how deeply I feel things, emotions are a private thing to me and it’s rare that a piece of print media can bring me to actual, real-life tears. Ojisama to Neko has finally done it. This particular comic hits awfully hard, especially when you know how it feels to suffer a serious loss. Sakurai-sensei draws it very gracefully.

Remember what I said about crying-but-not-actually-crying? I guess I’m more like Ojisama than I realized. But I think Fukumaru is the one teaching the real lesson here- even if you’re not sure whether you’ll succeed at something, always try anyway. Your effort will make a world of difference. I think Ojisama would agree with that.

I always felt strongly about the way Rictor describes losing his powers at the beginning of X-Factor Investigation. I see his mutation as a form of sensory extension that he’s been training to come to terms with for years – then having it ripped out of his being, resulting in numbness. That being said, I would have imagined that regaining them would have been much more emotional for him. Like finally being able to take a breath, like coming back home.

I originally drew this comic years ago, but this last week I went into a mad Ricstar-mode, and this was something that had been bugging me to redraw it. So I did. Qualitywise think of it as a 24Hcomic kind of deal.

(TW: The comic includes reference to suicide, some non-ideal reactions to it, and vomiting, but nothing graphic.)
