The Iceman Cometh Out

In All New X-Men #40, Iceman comes out as gay…no wait, I’m sorry – he’s outed by a telepath. That’s among the problems that I have with how this story was handled.

Normally I’m all for a new LGBTQ in comic books – more representation is a good thing, and part of me is glad that they’ve retconned…

I am not a fan of Bobby questioning whether or not he could be bisexual and Jean going “nope, read your mind, you’re totes homo.” I think Marvel missed a great opportunity to have a high-profile bisexual male character, because bisexuality is often portrayed through women vis-a-vis the male gaze – you know, it’s hot when it’s two chicks but gross when it’s two dudes. The only bi male comic characters I can think of right now are Catman – who Gail Simone SAYS is canonically bi but we haven’t seen that AT ALL in print to this day – and John Constantine, who was a victim of bi-erasure in his TV show.

Not only would it have been a good way to reach out to bisexual men, but it would have avoided a GIGANTIC wave of “but he always dated women so he’s straight!” complaints/continuity issues that are flooding comment sections as we speak. Not only a poorly-done “outing” but a bad PR call, and also a letdown for bisexual males looking for representation among superheroes.

I was trying to think of some bi characters and I was coming up short. I’d forgotten about Catman. I remembered Constantine but that was it.

btw, when Bobby suggested maybe he’s bi, Jean did say “They say everyone is.” lending some hope for the Kinsey Scale thing but then immediately, “But I think you’re full gay.” *sigh* That’s practically meme fuel.

Prodigy, late of the X-Men, last seen with the Young Avengers is another. Up to a whole three, woo hoo.

I’d have said Savant, but that’s in question post Nu52.

Shatterstar.

Daken but, uh, that’s not really great representation. Mystique but they waffle with that. Um. Xavin? Sorta? IDK.
